According to the report, Burton asked the customer to leave his debit or credit card with her so he could pay for gas.
A customer’s quick action helped Scottsboro police arrest a former gas station employee accused of stealing credit card information.
Police said Rachel Burton, a former clerk at a local BP gas station, is accused of copying a man’s card information after the store’s pay-at-the-pump system went down. Investigators said Burton asked the customer to leave his card with her to ensure he paid, then was captured on surveillance video allegedly writing down or taking photos of the card while the customer pumped gas. The victim later noticed unauthorized charges and contacted police. Police said the suspect completed three transactions, and several additional attempts were declined. Coty Durham with SPD encourages the community to keep a close eye on their finances.
“Any checking or savings accounts or anything like that, you've got just make sure that you have means to monitor that stuff,” Durham said.
The BP’s owner confirmed Burton worked at the station for about a week and that the business does not tolerate theft. Right now, Burton is charged with Identity Theft, Fraudulent Use of a Credit/Debit Card, and Theft of Property 4th Degree.
Scottsboro police also warned residents about a separate scam in which callers impersonate federal agents and ask people to leave cash, cards and checks in mailboxes for pickup. If you suspect you have been a victim of identity theft or a money scam, contact the police immediately.
