TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - It’s Ty Simpson’s turn to be Alabama's starting quarterback and he’s waited years for this opportunity.
“It’s a dream come true,” Simpson said after Tuesday’s practice. “I came here out of high school wanting to be the starting quarterback. And I’m just excited. And I can’t thank my teammates enough for making me look good. And I’m ready for the opportunity.”
Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was brief in making the decision official.
“Hey guys, Ty Simpson's our starter. How's that?” Grubb said.
But it’s been a long and winding road for Simpson to reach this point. He arrived as a five-star recruit in 2022, only to spend three years backing up Bryce Young and then Jalen Milroe.
“I think it’s abnormal for sure, to not transfer in today’s day and age,” Simpson said. “But I don’t regret it at all. I love being here. I love my teammates. I love this university. I learned a lot from the guys that played before me, like Bryce and Jalen. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.”
Grubb said Simpson has improved at his decision-making, throwing one interception all of fall camp. He also praised the quarterback’s “fiery” leadership style.
It’s definitely a monumental moment for Simpson and his family in Martin, Tennessee.
“I think my mom and dad started crying,” Simpson said about breaking the news to his parents. “So it was surreal. So I called my dad later that night, and then I took a nap.”
Once he woke up from the dream, he went back to work as the new leader of the Crimson Tide offense.
“Really, nothing’s gonna change,” Simpson said. “I’m gonna make sure I go through my process of just being the best I can be.”
Ty Simpson wins the starting quarterback job in his fourth season at Alabama.
